The Custom Jewelry Making Process

Custom jewelry designs are usually sketched on paper and the design is carved from wax.  The wax model is destroyed by the extreme heat in the casting process.  This jewelry making process is called "lost wax casting". Visit the How Custom Jewelry is Made  page to view a step by step discussion of this jewelry manufacturing process.  The designer carves each wax model individually, making each jewelry piece as unique as the person receiving it.

Your creation could be almost any type of jewelry and can be cast in sterling silver, yellow or white gold, or platinum.  If you have a picture or sketch of a ring or pendant design you would like done, this would be helpful to Tony in creating your unique piece of jewelry.  He can also make sketches of your jewelry design to be sent to you for your  approval.  During the custom jewelry process he will send you pictures through email of how your piece of custom gemstone jewelry is being made.  This one on one service helps to ensure that you get a very special piece of custom jewelry to treasure for many years to come.

Payne's can provide diamonds and other gemstones to use in your custom ring or pendant at a reasonable price.  Tony also does lapidary work, or stone cutting, using turquoise, Australian Marra mamba tiger-eye, fossilized dinosaur bone from Utah, African pietersite, green bloodstone, Mexican fire agate, Australian opal, black onyx and many other beautiful gemstones.  He also works with mastodon ivory either as inlay or scrimshaw pieces. Tony can also set your own gemstones in the jewelry design.

The Cost of Custom Jewelry

The prices for custom gemstone jewelry depends on the complexity of the design, what metal is used and which gemstones are included in the piece.  For a simple custom ring the labor charge to carve, cast and finish begins at $250.  The labor charge for a simple pendant starts at $150.  The labor charge for a custom championship or class ring with lettering or a design on the top and both sides begins at $1,200.  The price of the precious metal will depend on the type of metal and its weight, as well as current market conditions.
